For companies and institutions, selecting the right technology for capturing and utilising CO₂ is far from straightforward. With the help of a clear, easy-to-use questionnaire and concise factsheets, the new digital tool Map-it CCU supports organisations in making well-informed decisions.
More and more companies and institutions are investing in carbon capture to help meet climate targets. However, it is often difficult for them to assess which technology is most effective and cost-efficient. By entering a few technical parameters – such as the concentration, temperature and pressure of the CO₂ stream – Map-it CCU generates an overview of all available technologies, ranked according to their suitability.
Each technology is explained in a short factsheet, which includes the key specifications and an indicative cost estimate. In addition to capture technologies, Map-it CCU also provides information on CO₂ purification, conditioning and the different routes for CO₂ conversion.
This gives users a complete picture of the available options for CO₂ management. The tool does not provide binding advice but rather offers a practical starting point: organisations can quickly see which solutions are most likely to deliver positive results and are therefore worth exploring further.
“With Map-it CCU we want to lower the threshold for organisations that want to get started with carbon capture but are unsure where to begin,” says Miet Van Dael, researcher at VITO and coordinator of this VLAIO intercluster COOCK+ project. “The tool supports a first selection, making it easier to take more in-depth decisions afterwards.”
In addition to the decision-support tool, a series of online learning modules is available, offering a broader context on several commonly used CO₂ capture technologies. These learning modules are freely accessible to everyone via the CAPTURE Academy.
With the launch of Map-it CCU, an important step has been taken to make knowledge about carbon capture and utilisation more accessible to a wide group of companies and organisations.
What is the Map-it CCU project? The Map-it CCU project is a VLAIO intercluster COOCK+ project, supported by the spearhead clusters Catalisti and FLUX50. The project was developed within the CAPTURE community. Under the coordination of VITO, four leading research institutes and CAPTURE partners – Ghent University, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and VITO – together with Smart Delta Resources Flanders, have worked on the development of this supportive tool for the Flemish industry and beyond.
